The Steam Elephant by Steven R. Southard Steven R. Southard blames Jules Verne for how his life has turned out. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea forced him to major in Naval Architecture and serve in the submarine force, then later work as a naval engineer. The rest of the Verne canon compelled him to scribble his own tales in various genres: steampunk, science fiction, historical, horror, and fantasy. Go to http://sites.google.com/site/stevenrsouthard/ to learn more about what can happen after too much exposure to JV. Come to think about it, perhaps it's not so much blame as unbounded gratitude and admiration. |

Jillian Venters Author: Letters Between Young Ladies Of Fashionable Society, And The Alarming Events That Unfold Within, Pt.3 Also penned Letters Between Young Ladies Of Fashionable Society, And The Alarming Events That Unfold Within, Pt. 1 which appeared in Steampunk Tales: Issue #2 Jillian Venters was a fairly spooky and morbid child. When she discovered the existence of the whole Gothic sub-culture, she clapped her hands with glee and fell upon it like a baby bat upon a box of Count Chocula cereal. Since then, the Lady of the Manners has spent a not inconsiderable amount of time trying to gently persuade others in her chosen subculture that being a polite Goth is much, much more subversive than just wearing T-shirts with "edgy" sayings on them. She lives in Seattle. http://www.gothic-charm-school.com/ |

V.I.C. 443701 Arkwright (M.V.S.S.) Author: The Gods of War Also penned Flight of the Swallow, which appeared in Steampunk Tales: Issue #2 Arkwright describes himself as a man born out of his proper time. Growing up in the 1970s and '80s, he developed a far greater bond with the past than the present; influenced by writers such as H.G. Wells and Nigel Kneale, he developed a distinctly dystopian view of the future. For a man living in the past, archaeology was a natural career choice and this lead him on adventures around the world before harsh economic realities determined that he return home and “get a real job.” During the last 15 years he has written and occasionally published numerous works on archaeology and social history. His specialty has always been the post-medieval period, including the Industrial Revolution and the era known as the Early Modern. Arkwright’s introduction to steampunk occurred at university; and for a long time, his interest in the genre expressed itself as an eclectic collection of science fiction films, books and illustrations. In 2008, Arkwright made the decision to fulfill a lifelong dream to become a writer and filmmaker, at the same time adopting his current pen name which immerses him in the overarching background to his writing. Since then, the dream has become more of a reality, and as well as writing short stories, he is working on a number of steampunk short films and is scripting a steampunk radio play. In 2009, Arkwright became a member of the highly exclusive Victorian Steampunk Society. |

Donald E. Tiers Author: Facets and Fantasy, Part One Don Tiers is a gentle Buddhist from a bygone era; an oaf, a bon vivant, a tradesman, and currently a writer. His tastes run from the macabre to the mundane, searching this lifetime for anything fun. Previous publications of his material are now non-existent, however can be brought back from memory if he is able. "The Execution of a Goat Thief" was a short one-man play about the episode at Golgotha some two-thousand years ago, and was published in a quarterly from The Mystic Gryphon. Other stories and humor have been available on his "Live Journal". He is befriended by a Writer/Director/Producer and Restaurateur in a local Alabama town known as Montevallo. He has argued with Issac Asimov and was apologized to by his commanding officer in the U.S. Navy when he received a letter from then President Ronald Reagan. |
